 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'ni April 16, 1971 – March 31 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion gave Selena the title of "Queen" of Tejano music. She is one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers of late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists" according to Latin albums and Latin songs charts. In her selection of clothes media outlets dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices make her among the most prominent Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. They were frequently criticised during the 1980s and she was refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. The acclaim she received grew after she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the year in 1987. It was awarded nine times. In 1989 she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo made it to the top spot on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive months. The album's popularity in the marketplace has led critics to label it the "breakthrough" album of her career. "Como la Flor" is one of the singles became her most beloved hero song. Live! (1993) was nominated for the Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano album to be awarded this award. In 1994 she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most successful Latin albums in the United States. It was praised by critics as the first Tejano music album that was commercially viable, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
